We love a good whiskey cocktail. We love it better when it’s bacon whiskey! With true American flair, Chef Yankel has designed this seasonal cocktail to warm those wintry nights. The secret to the Gingerly Johnnie is in the simple syrup: It’s like drinking a light, candied bacon, perfectly balanced with the ginger and apple elements that come later. And remember to use a good-quality blended scotch if you can’t get your hands on Johnnie Red. Don’t tread gingerly for this one!

Ingredients (13):

  • Simple Syrup
  • 3 slices ButcherBox Bacon, cooked until crispy, then crumbled
  • 2 Tbsp fresh ginger, minced
  • 1 c turbinado sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • Into the Shaker
  • 2 slices Granny Smith apples, lightly charred
  • 1 Tbsp ginger slices
  • 4 ounces Johnnie Walker Red Label
  • Candied Apple
  • 4 slices Red Delicious apple
  • 2 Tbsp brown sugar
  • splash of ginger ale

Directions:

  1. Mix all simple syrup ingredients in sauce pot and simmer for ten minutes. Strain and chill.
  2. For the candied apple, place red delicious apple on wire rack set in baking sheet, top with brown sugar and broil until sugar is melted. Chill in freezer.
  3. Place fresh ginger slices and charred Granny Smith apples in cocktail shaker along with Johnnie Walker and muddle well.
  4. Add 4 ounces simple syrup and ice to cocktail shaker, then shake vigorously.
  5. Pour into serving glass filled with crushed ice, top with splash of ginger ale and garnish with candied apple slices. Cheers!
