Why ButcherBox is great for families


Two years ago, ButcherBox founder Mike Salguero wanted to find a way to feed his growing family healthier meat. After taking part in a cow share he realized that more people should have the opportunity to enjoy the better flavor and tenderness of healthy grass-fed beef.

Scouring the world, Mike and his team met and partnered with small family farmers and created the monthly meat delivery service ButcherBox. From the beginning, the goal was to make it easier for people to get grass-fed and grass-finished beef as well as other healthy, humanely-raised meats.

When you sign up for a ButcherBox membership, you get lots of options to choose from in terms of quantity and types of meat you want delivered to your door each month.

The first step to getting the best ButcherBox for you and your family is to choose either a curated box — featuring 100% grass-fed and grass-finished beef, organic free-range chicken, and heritage breed pork— or a custom box. With a custom box, you can choose which cuts of beef, pork, or chicken you will get delivered to your door. You can also choose beef only, beef and pork, beef and chicken, or all 3.

Our curated boxes include well-known cuts of beef and pork — New York strip steak, filet mignon, and pork chops, for instance — as well as more difficult to find cuts of meat like boneless country-style ribs, beef brisket, and tri-tip steak. ButcherBox Head Chef, Yankel Polak, also includes some of his favorite recipes and cooking tips to help members make delicious meals with their monthly box of various cuts.

In addition to picking between a custom and a curated box, members can also select the amount of meat they receive each month, depending on how many mouths there are to feed. Our two different sized boxes include one with enough meat for 24 meals and another with enough for 48 meals.

Shipping is always free. Our meat is frozen at the peak of freshness, individually vacuum-packaged, and delivered to your door in an insulated box, frozen and packaged with care. All of our boxes are filled with a specific amount of dry ice that's carefully calculated based on your geographic location. You'll receive a tracking number the night your box ships. No factory farms, no unethical practices


Eating and feeding our families clean, healthy food is a priority for us, as it is for a growing number of Americans. We take pride in sourcing meat from livestock that live as nature intended.

No factory farms. No unethical farming practices. No antibiotics or hormones.

We have close relationships with suppliers to ensure that cattle are raised in a humane manner and live their entire life on pasture.

Our chicken is certified humane, and it is sourced from both free-range organic chicken farmers and farms that pasture-raise chickens.

The heritage breed pork is also free of antibiotics and hormones. Our small family farmers raise pork with Duroc, Berkshire and Red Wattle genetics on pasture or by the strict guidelines that we have set to ensure they are raised in open barns with space to engage in natural behaviors.

We often visit our source farms to make sure our standards are being met.


Improving the food system


We hold all our suppliers to strict standards and taste test every cut before putting it in your ButcherBox.

ButcherBox is also concerned with our impact on nature, and we are constantly searching for ways to be stewards by creating balance between the meat industry and the environment. Many of the family farms we source our meat from use regenerative and sustainable farming practices.

Our farmer partners are like family, and we are proud of the steps many of them take to not just lessen the environmental impact of the meat industry, but to serve as advocates for ethical farming in the communities and beyond.

After years of researching suppliers and sampling products, we have found a collection of producers that we trust wholeheartedly. They include family run farms and cooperatives who hold quality and animal welfare as core values.

ButcherBox believes that the food system in this country needs to be improved; animal welfare issues occur too often, people in rural areas have limited access to clean and healthy food sources, and there is far too much confusion on how to eat well.


What better meat means for your health


Over 95% of the beef for sale in the U.S. is grain-fed and processed in feedlots. These feedlots, or factory farms, often use hormones and antibiotics because the conditions they keep their cattle and pigs in are so dangerous.

Our beef and pork does not contain the hormones and antibiotics used in these places. Our chickens are either free-range organic or pasture-raised. ButcherBox members eat meat that does not include the unnatural substances found in standard meat

Because of their grass-fed and grass-finished diet, our cows have a number of health benefits. For example, grass-fed beef has less fat, a better omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acid profile, and more antioxidants.

The animals also are more active, living on pasture or spending large quantities of time roaming the land. They are more muscular so the meat they produce is often leaner. And whether it’s bacon, chicken tenders, or a chuck roast, it tastes amazing.
